PUBLIC NOTICE
Date: September 30, 2024
Beginning September 28, 2024, and lasting through September 29, 2024, the
Lowcountry Regional Water System experienced a wastewater overflow at its
Hampton Wastewater Treatment Facility in the Town of Hampton.
The Treatment Facility was limited in the amount of treated wastewater it was
able to discharge. This was a result of the utility power outages the community
experienced related to Hurricane Helene. Once the treatment facility reached
its maximum storage capacity, the facility experienced partial discharge
overflows at the intake structure of the facility.
The facility utility power was restored on September 29, 2024. The plant
operations have returned to normal. It was estimated that more than 200,000
gallons was discharged adjacent to the treatment facility onto property owned
by Lowcountry Regional Water System. This property is mostly swampy
backwater of Sanders Branch.
As a precaution the Lowcountry Regional Water System advises that the public
not enter, swim or eat any fish from Sanders Branch below the treatment plant
to the Hickory Hill Rd. area. Lowcountry Regional Water System has cleaned up
the area and will monitor the water quality in Sanders Branch.
