Town of Yemassee Water Customers

The Lowcountry Regional Water System (LRWS) has received information from customers in the Town of Yemassee concerning higher than normal amounts of chlorine in their drinking water. LRWS has discovered that a malfunctioning chlorinator has injected higher than normal amounts of chlorine into the water supply. LRWS has taken the malfunctioning equipment offline and has begun flushing the water system to reduce the elevated chlorine. LRWS will continue flushing and testing the water system chlorine levels throughout the Town of Yemassee’s water system until the chlorine levels return to normal. Customers may experience higher than normal chlorine levels and discolored water during the flushing process. Customers are urged to take caution if they notice a very strong bleach odor and are encouraged to run their cold water until the odor reduces and any discolored water clears up.

Water suppliers add chlorine to protect public health and disinfect public water supplies to insure clean safe water. Chlorine has been used in public water supplies for more than 100 years and is considered safe under normal use.
